The Return of the Hillbilly Scouts

Do you remember Kellen's (8) Hillbilly Scouts from last spring? This was Kellen's club where you are ranked by your hollow climbing, creek wading and hillbilly abilities. He, his siblings, and cousins played this all summer.

We haven't heard much of it this winter, until last week when he built a club house in the back yard. He used various scrap we have around from different projects. He built a table and used some 5 gallon buckets for chairs. He also claimed and named his territory. He was busy with it for hours!

Then he and Lydia (5) made helmets from shoe boxes. I'm not sure why exactly they need helmets, but it was cute. Lydia's didn't get finished yet.

He put feathers on top of the helmet to represent the levels he has reached. He also added a grouse level with a feather from the bird that crashed into our window.

Then this week he wrote the Hillbilly Scout Pledge of Allegiance. I didn't know what he was up to. I saw him at the computer and asked what he was doing. He was pretty shy about it, but told me. I was pretty impressed with what he wrote. I did help him with some spelling, but the rest is all his. He told me that he tried to use big words. Here is what he wrote:

Hillbilly Scouts Pledge of Allegiance

I pledge my childhood to be a Hillbilly Scout. To go against the ways of civilization. To be under no rules. To go through the world and do outrageous stuff (gross, weird, and just plain out dangerous) to advance up the levels of hillbilly-ness. To try to get our parents to home school us. I pledge this all to hillbilly-ness

No rules? Well, we'll see about that part! Meanwhile, imaginations are running wild here at the 100 Acre Wood. I wouldn't have it any other way!

  1. I think that's so cute. I left Kellen a comment yesterday when he posted it and told him that I'll bet Jeff Foxworthy would like to know about this Hillbilly Scouts thing. It would make a great skit on Blue Collar TV. He's very creative!
