Life and Death; all in the same day

When you can raise animals there will be lots of ups and downs. You will see the miracle of life, and taste the sadness of death. Some days it will happen all in the same day.

This morning Papaw found Patty, well, the remains of Patty. She wasn't far from home. She was down in a hollow; apparently the only one the four of us who looked for her did not look in. She had been there too long to tell what had happened. She was old, so maybe she just died of old age. That is what I'd like to think anyway.

This afternoon I noticed Twist was not with the rest of the herd. Since she is one of the two goats that we've been expecting kids from, I figured today was finally the day. I was not disappointed. Mamaw and Papaw spied them from the driveway. Them as in all three of them! Twins!

If you've never seen a baby goat, they are just about the cutest things ever. I didn't get the best pictures today, but you know there will be more to come. The spotted one is just too adorable. They are both boys which is sad because we won't be keeping them. We'll have to decide whether to sell or butcher them. They are meat goats, but I didn't know they'd be so cute!

Just another day on the farm.

  1. Congrats on the twins! They are so cute!
Sorry about Patty though. Do the kids take these things hard? Or have they learned that this is the way it is?

  2. The reaction to the twinners was all unanimous here! "Awwww!!!" Sorry to hear about Patty - hope the kids aren't scarred. I remember seeing chickens and pigs butchered when I was little and it not phasing me a bit (farm girl).

  3. AWWWWWW!! You were right about that one!!! Too bad about Patty. I hope you were right about her, too.

  4. I didn't grow up on a farm, but now my OH raises rabbits, chickens, various game birds...I haven't gotten used to the cycle of life yet, but I do very much appreciate the births. Those twins are too cute :)

  5. Thanks for letting me brag! ;)

The kids really aren't too phased by the animals dying. That is part of life here I guess. Of course none of the animals they are close to have died. I sure that would be a different story!

  6. Steph, what was Patty? I've had a look back through some posts and I can't find her. The goats are great though.

  7. HAPPY BIRTHDAY STEPHANIE! Hope you have a great day!Mike Rowe's birthday is today and Madison is going to frost a sponge and act like it's a cake. She thought of that herself.STACY ALSO GOT " I LOVE MIKE ROWE" shirts from the Discovery Channel for her and the girls to wear today. HAVE A GOOD DAY! Aunt Sis

  8. Yellow,
Patty was a goat. She went missing about a month ago or so.

    Aunt Sis,
Thanks! Madison is the clever one isn't she?!

  9. Poor Patty. Hopefully she went peacefully.
The twins are indeed too cute. I imagine I would have to sell them, but since I've never farmed (the occasional vegetable garden doesn't really count), I don't know.

  10. twins are good. Get rid of any that do not regularly give birth to twins.
If you are going to eat them make sure to band them now.
