We're Molting

The weather is nasty. The sun is hiding, and we hens are  in a state. It is so stressful on a girl.  I'm quite embarrassed at our bedraggled appearance, but this just happens every now and then. It is part of being a hen.

Our apologies to all our fresh egg customers out there, but we just can't produce when we are like this. We are getting a little extra light, and some extra yummy treats with our feed. We're trying to pull ourselves back together, and get back to producing. Thank you for your patience.

  1. Our six hens are going through the same problem. Being a newer chicken owner I was glad to read your post and find out that "its a chicken thing" that they are going through :)

  2. What kind of treats are you feeding your chidkens in the cold months? Here I cook them some oatmeal to warm their tummies on a really cold morning. Otherwise some leftover lettuce, cantaloupe and apples.

  3. I never understood why they molt in the coldest part of the year. You would think they need those feathers. lol

  4. Diane,
They always get our food scraps, but I cleaned out some old things in the freezer for them too. They have had venison, green beans, old buns, and other goodies. Trying to get them more protein and more greens. I may give them some rabbit feed for extra greens in their diet.

  5. Stephanie,
I just spoke to Tim yesterday at church and was telling him that our hens still haven't started laying yet. We have had them since July time frame....but I have to say, we got our first egg yesterday!!!! We were so excited..lol. We also feed ours along with their feed all our table scraps. He gave me a great tip on the lighting...gonna try it out!
